This painting, like all my work, was created through blending only the Colorado flag colors: red, yellow and blue. The whites are the white of the paper. I worked to keep these colors prominent, but had fun overlapping to make the grays of the Collegiate Peaks (in the middle of the state) and the brown and greens of the Sage. My favorite part was the most spontaneous: last minute, I flung beads of yellow around the Indian Paintbrush flowers, and this action made the Colorado sunshine in the yellow circle jump alive. My goal was to create a version of the flag that was not just symbolic, but subtle and elegant, and that truly represented the beauty of our state.
